A good wiki...

useful chem

So I am starting to understand better the openness of a wiki

The most recent post here was about the cooling effects of soda pop.

I can see a question to pose to start a really good inquiry lab...

Something like "How do carbonated beverages create a cooling effect when consumed?"

Ideas ideas, but using web tools during class time is still a risky venture, it will take time to adopt, and some of us are really happy with the results we are getting with our traditional approaches.

I could see substituting a wiki as opposed to a lab report, and let all my 30-40 lab groups create one super, interactive, collaborative report... hmmmm Looking at all of my classmates blogs, I am impressed and intimidated.

Good night,
Jasper

  1. please don't be intimidated by these blogs... its just like a science fair! Everyone will set things up their own way, and each poster will be decorated differently but each one has a unique story to tell!

By the way, I love your blog title!

  2. I am also a little unsure how I will incorporate all this, first I have to become a little more fluent myself. Buut I am wondering abouut 1 thing- do you think a wiki with 30-40 groups working onit would be a good idea?

I only ask because in another class I am taking, the professor did not assign groups and so the discussion this weeks was crazy! every time I checked my computer (2-3 times a day)there were another 30 posts! I could not keep up.
Even here, there are quite a lot of blogs to look at.

  3. I have four chemistry classes, 7-12 lab groups per class. I guess I could set each wiki with just one class. I think that if you made each group make one main post, then leave five comments to other groups... lets see thats, 40x1 = 40x5 = 240 posts I would have to read. But could you imagine the advantage the fourth class would have when they jump on the computers after 30 or so have already posted...

In terms of staying sane, I think you limit yourself to only checking it during class when you are not helping groups, during the period the wiki is being constructed of course, and then just once each night simply to gather points for each group. Can't wait to continue to think this one through. As you can see I work best on the fly, I would have to try this, couldn't plan it, just do it and see

  5. Jasper - I have used wikis to collect chemistry class assignments and it can work if rules and deadlines are clear to the students. See for example:
